SPEAK NO MORE

Since there's so much left to say,

Let us go without a word:

Words but give the head away,

The heart needs silence to be heard.

Speak no more, then: what is spoken

Only hides what we would find.

Let us keep at least unbroken

Each a chamber in our mind.

No Farewells, of blame no tittle:

Such are stuff for others who

        Rested lightly, loved a little,

        Parted, sought another view.

        When within the night-time turning

There's no treasure to our hand,

There's the lesson made for learning,

        We may learn, may understand.

Not till then-if then, or ever-

Let us talk the puzzle out.

        Voiceless, let us now dissever

Things we could not do without.

There's your way, and this my turning.

Pass you lightly. Who shall  know

        How far out before returning

Winds the circle? Let us go.

        (John O'Hare)
